چکیده

This study focuses on the problem Japanese learners have in distinguishing between Tone 2 and Tone 3 when learning tones in Mandarin. Acoustic experiments were carried out based on the four basic vowels in Mandarin. They were designed using continual sound stimuli, which gradually changed from Tone 2 to Tone 3 (i.e. turning point and ΔF0) and performed on Japanese learners and Chinese native speakers. We demonstrated that the ability of Japanese learners to distinguish between tones 2 and 3 was affected by both factors, but more so by the turning point. Moreover, the perception distributions of the Japanese learners in our experiments varied amongst the four vowels. We found the distribution for the ambiguity of perception boundary was /i/ > /ü/ > /a/ > /u/, while the sequences of the four vowels’ F2 values is also /i/ > /ü/ > /a/ > /u/. Thus, our experimental results suggest that the perception discrimination of the Tone 2 and Tone 3 in Japanese learners of Mandarin may be affected by the difference in F2 value.

Perception of L2 Tones: L1 Lexical Tone Experience May Not Help

This study investigates whether adult L2 learners’ experience with lexical tones and pitch accent in their first language facilitates the acquisition of L2 lexical tones. Three groups of beginning learners of Mandarin with different L1 prosodic experience: native Hmong (a tone language), native Japanese (a pitch and accent language), and native English (a non-tone, non-pitch accent language) sp...

Error patterns of Mandarin disyllabic tones by Japanese learners

Previous studies on Mandarin tone production indicate that there is no agreement on which tones are most difficult for L2 learners. Much of previous research on L2 learning of Mandarin tones has focused on monosyllables. In modern Mandarin, however, it is disyllabic words that dominate the vocabulary. This research investigates the production of Mandarin disyllabic tones by Japanese learners. I...

The acquisition of English tones by Mandarin EFL learners: A preliminary study

This paper reports a pretest-posttest experimental study of the acquisition of English tones by Mandarin EFL learners in a Chinese university. The target tones are high fall, high rise, fall-rise and complex level tones embedded in non-English words, one/two-syllable English words and short English sentences. The subjects are 31 Mandarin EFL learners majoring in English, who have learnt English...

The Application of the Speech Learning Model to the L2 Acquisition of Mandarin Tones

One major hypothesis of the Speech Learning Model (SLM) is that if the sounds in the second language (L2) are dissimilar to the learners’ first language (L1), learners are more likely to form new phonetic categories for these sounds after receiving sufficient L2 input and achieve native-like proficiency. As for the L2 sounds that are similar to the L1, learners often equate them with L1 categor...

L1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners

This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...
